A World unique train visits Western Sweden
in conjunction with the Bioenergy Days!
Friday August 25, the train Amanda will realize a trip from Mariestad to Vänersborg and Trollhättan. The unique thing about this train is that it is biogas driven. A fuel produced locally from trash products instead of imported fossil fuel. For example out sorted trash from households, drain slam or trash from slaughterhouses be used as starting material.
Biogas is a growing vehicle fuel for cars in Sweden. This train has shown that it does not have to stop with just cars. The train – that is a rebuilt diesel engine – is normally running a distance between Linköping and Västervik. It has already created a great attention there as a well functional environmental alternative to the diesel driven trains that otherwise are running lines without electricity. Now this train will come to Western Sweden in conjunction with the bioenergy days!
The idea is that local decision makers, media and other interested people along the way shall get the opportunity to see the train and to hear more about the technique and the possibilities with biogas as a bio fuel.

Facts about biogas
Biogas is being made in a microbial separation of organic material in an oxygen free environment. This is a natural process that exists for example in swamps and in the stomach – intestine in chewing animals. In a building for production of biogas at all happens under control in a rot chamber. The created gas, mostly consisting of methane and carbon dioxide, is being collected. To be used as vehicle fuel the gas needs to be upgraded by increasing the methane content to approximately 97% which in principle occurs when the carbon dioxide is being removed.
Biogas train between Mariestad and Trollhättan to visit a production factory for biogas.
Program
(pending time)
8.00 AM
Breakfast meeting in Mariestad with information about the train for local media, county politicians etc.
9.00
Departure from Mariestad.
9.45
Arrival in Lidköping. Information about the county’s biogas investments (part of the KLIMP-program), demonstration of the train for those interested.
10.10
Departure Lidköping.
10.45
Arrival in Grästorp. Information about possible biogas projects in the county. The travellers will be served a light lunch and a demonstration of the train for interested people.
11.45
Departure Grästorp.
12.00 PM
Arrival in Vänersborg. Departure and introduction to study trip at Trollhättan energy. Different links in the production chain for biogas will be visited. During this time the train will be transported to Trollhättan to get gas and for a demonstration for those interested.
4.00
Departure Trollhättan for return journey to Mariestad. Estimated arrival time 5:30 PM.
We have combined study trip nr 2 and 3 to one single tour. The trip starts and ends at the hotel in Lundsbrunn and is being carried out with a biogas driven bus. The bus is borrowed from Vässtrafik and is normally running in Trollhättan/Vänersborg.
At this study trip we will visit a chip driven local heating central driven by five farmers who are selling prepared heat, we visit a small house manufacturer who has a small pellet press from SPC and refines rest products to energy pellets. We visit a cultivator of hemp and who is also producing briquettes from it.
We have lunch at Löfvings studio, Broddetorp and get the opportunity to take a look at one of Western Götaland’s best artists who paints nature scenery in oil. The journey continues to Limmergårds Lantbruk AB, who is heating up a chicken stable and houses with a 200 k W firm fuel boiler driven by grain / chips/ pellets/ briquettes/ chicken manure. We will get to see a biogas refill of the bus before visiting Katrinefors Power Heating Works in Mariestad where they produce district heating and power with waste products from paper production. On our way back we visit four farmers in Skeby who have come together to produce rape oil and who are planning on even refining rape cake to agro pellets. The study trip ends with a visit to RangSells recycling construction that handles 400 000 kbm RT-chips per year.
The thought is that one single study trip will show an example of how wide the bioenergy sector is and the possibilities there are to create new companies and growth. The trip turns to everyone interested in bioenergy.
Program for study trip 2
8:45- 9:15 AM
The guests staying at Lundsbrunn are being given the possibility to take a look at the hotel’s pellets driven heating central.
8:30
The bus picks up guests at Äfab’s Bioenergy exhibit for transportation to Lundsbrunn.(The exhibit opens at 8:00 AM for those interested in a visit)
9:15- 9:45
Lundsbrunn’s Bioenergy AB. Five farmers who are selling prepared heat to schools and houses. Chip boiler of 250 kW, oil boiler of 250 kW, chip pocket 35 m3 buried, and smoke gas cleaning (multi cyclone). The chips are being bought of the part owners who are taking care of the operation at the construction and others.
10:00- 10:15
Värsåsvillan who is producing wood pellets from chips and waste products from small house manufacturing. We get to see a SPC press in action.
11:00- 11:45
Gudhems Prästgård. Beef production with a big nurse cow crew. Cultivation of hemp that is being harvested in the Spring with a Jaguar pick that is also being used for harvesting Salix. Pressed to briquettes and sold to house owners.
12:00- 1:00 PM
LUNCH Löfvings Studio, Broddetorp
1:30- 2:00
Limmergårds Lantbruk AB. Heating of chicken stable and houses. New boiler central with storage hall for bio fuels, boiler room with 200 kW firm fuel boiler, feeding table for grain/chips/pellets/briquettes/chicken manure. The Bio fuel construction replaces about 90 m3 burning oil.
2:30-2:45
We visit a gas station for bio gas and take the opportunity to get gas for the bus.
3:00- 3:30
Katrinefors Power Heating Works is one of the largest environmental investments ever in the history of Mariestad, both financially and environmentally. By using fiber mud, a waste product from the paper works, as fuel they have produced a power heating works that almost only is using renewable raw material as fuel. At the same time this project demonstrates that it is possible to transform a problem to a new energy resource.
4:00- 4:30
Four farmers in Skeby are a predecessor in producing Bio fuels. Pressing of rape seed. Sales of rape oil and rape cake. Planning on using rape cake in some kind of agro pellets.
4:45- 5:10
Production of RT-chips at RangSells construction at Kartåsen. The company is producing 400 000 kbm RT-chips per year that are being burned in firm fuel boilers in Middle Sweden.
5:15 Ca:
We arrive the Train station in Lidköping where people staying in Lidköping can depart, at the same time we pick up the travelers in Study trip 1 who are staying at Lundsbrunn.
